HKU mourns the passing of Mr Tung Chee-hwa

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr Tung Chee-hwa, the former Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and former Chancellor of HKU.

Mr Tung served Hong Kong at a defining stage in the city’s history. A champion of education, research, and innovation, he encouraged deeper engagement between universities, industry, and society, ensuring that academic excellence would create a lasting impact. He championed the adoption of the groundbreaking "3+3+4" education model, which significantly enhanced the depth and breadth of the city’s higher education.

After his retirement, Mr Tung continued to take a keen interest in higher education. The generous support from the Tung Foundation for HKU’s New College reflects his dedication and enduring care for generations of HKU students.

HKU remembers with deep gratitude Mr Tung's visionary and selfless service to Hong Kong and his encouragement of the University’s work. His commitment to developing talent and strengthening Hong Kong's capacity for innovation will remain an important part of his public service legacy.
